Hawaiian Islands with bums

Aside from the economic importance of military jobs within the Hawaiian Islands, tourism is a vital system. Hotels, entertainment, and meals cost about $200 a day for tourists, reports NPR. Only $3 a day is spent by the homeless for room, board, and full health coverage in the Hawaiian Islands. There is help for those living within the Hawaiian Islands with food although most the individuals in line aren’t even locals.

Homelessness on the Hawaiian Islands is up

In the past 12 months, shelter populations have increased by 10 percent. 1,300 of those individuals, as outlined by NPR, aren’t even from the state. Plastic and Aluminum could be redeemed for 5 cents in Hawaii which is what brings more people in to the state. $40 a day is made by Gary Phillips in Hawaii rather than the little amount he made in San Diego previously. The state will give people like Phillips free health care, $200 a month in food stamps, and let them sleep at the $3 shelter that gives 3 meals. After being supported like this, they do not need money for anything else.

Perfect to visit when homeless or vacationing

Hawaii is using Medicaid and tax refunds to try and cover their budget deficit which is $1.2 billion. This is a bad time for more homeless to move in considering homeless shelters take millions of tax dollars to operate. NPR reports that Connie Mitchell who’s a director of a homeless shelter says a third of her budget goes directly to these new people moving in. Mitchell and others are concerned that a lot of people may even be taking up the homeless lifestyle simply to enjoy the tropical breezes and free care.

Homeless in Honolulu

According to the University of Hawaii’s Center on the Family, 21 percent of bums were Caucasian in 2005 while now 43 percent are. They’re mostly single and middle-aged. These people work on odd jobs when living in Hawaii off taxpayer money after getting enough to fly over. Once authorities figure out their resource dilemma, it is likely that the homeless people will largely move on. The government can have a hard time figuring out which people are living there because they need it or because they just want to live there. Everyone abusing the system shouldn’t be allowed to do it since you will find people that really need instant loans and help from the programs.

UPDATE – Hawaii has tried sending homeless individuals back to the mainland. New York has decided to fly them BACK to Hawaii.
