Linda McMahon has just received the nomination from the Republican Party to run for the United States Senate. One seat is being fought for this November. Linda McMahon is indeed the wife of Vince McMahon Jr., and she is the former CEO of WWE Entertainment. She quit the family business to run for the Senate seat, which Chris Dodd is retiring from as his term finishes.
GOP can smell what McMahon is cooking
Part of Linda McMahon’s campaign is not taking any campaign contributions from public funds, Political Action Committees or special interests. According to ABC, she’s spent $ 22 million of her own money on her campaign so far and doesn’t mind spending a lot more between now and November. She’s running against Dick Blumenthal, the Connecticut Attorney General since 1991 and previously a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and Connecticut State Senate.
What is it she stands for?
Linda McMahon, if a label must be affixed, could be effortlessly classified as a neo-conservative. Fiscal conservatism, and a strong platform of deregulation and creating jobs are issues that are central to her campaign. She is somewhat hawkish on Iran, but she’s spoken in support of the Obama administration’s approach to the war in Afghanistan. She’s already created controversy with mainline Republicans, having donated cash to a Republican pro-choice PAC, though opposed to partial-birth abortions. She is friendlier to LGBT issues than the President has seemed to be so far, as she is for the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policies and doesn’t think the federal government should have a say concerning gay marriage.
So what is the bottom line?
She is, assuredly, one more famous and wealthy person running for office. She is not the first person do that, but her direction of WWE as CEO took the business public, the only pro wrestling organization that is publicly traded, and is now almost as popular as NASCAR. (The McMahons do own many of the shares.) A few of her policies are incredibly popular, and voters may put her into office. So what are you going to do, brother, when Wrestle mania goes to Washington?
